Overview

Paris, the capital of France, sits on the River Seine in northern France. It has been a major European city and a global centre for art, fashion, gastronomy and culture since the 17th century. Its 19th-century cityscape is crisscrossed by wide boulevards and the River Seine. The city is known for its café culture and designer boutiques along the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Paris is from April to June and October to early November. Spring brings blooming gardens and pleasant temperatures (15–20°C). Autumn offers mild weather with beautiful foliage and fewer tourists. Summer (July–August) is peak season with long days but larger crowds. Winter is charming with Christmas markets, but expect temperatures of 3–7°C.

Getting Around

Paris has one of the world's best public transport systems. The Métro covers the entire city with 16 lines. Buy a Navigo Easy card for convenient travel. Walking is the best way to explore neighbourhoods like Le Marais and Montmartre. Vélib' bikes are available for rent throughout the city. Taxis and ride-shares are readily available but expensive during rush hours.

Local Cuisine

Paris is a food lover's paradise. Start your day with a fresh croissant and café crème. Try classic bistro dishes like duck confit, steak frites, and French onion soup. Don't miss the patisseries for macarons, tarte tatin and pain au chocolat. Street crêpes near Montparnasse are iconic. For fine dining, the city boasts over 100 Michelin-starred restaurants.

Safety Tips

Paris is generally safe for tourists. Be vigilant against pickpockets, especially on the Métro and around tourist hotspots like the Eiffel Tower, Sacré-Cœur, and the Champs-Élysées. Keep valuables in front pockets or a cross-body bag. Avoid unofficial taxi drivers. The emergency number is 112 (EU-wide) or 17 for police.

Cultural Etiquette

Always greet with 'Bonjour' before asking anything — it's considered rude not to. Tipping is not mandatory (service is included) but rounding up is appreciated. Dress smartly — Parisians tend to dress well. Avoid loud conversations in restaurants and on public transport. Most shops close on Sundays. Learn a few basic French phrases — locals appreciate the effort.
