What to Eat

Classic Roman pasta — carbonara, amatriciana, cacio e pepe — plus supplì, pizza al taglio and gelato on every corner.

April–June and September–October offer warm weather and manageable crowds. August is very hot and many locals leave.

Arts & Culture

From the Colosseum to Galleria Borghese, Rome is an open-air museum. Attend an opera at Terme di Caracalla in summer.

Overview

Rome, Italy's capital, is a sprawling city with nearly 3,000 years of globally influential art, architecture and culture on display. Ancient ruins such as the Forum and the Colosseum evoke the power of the former Roman Empire.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal. Summers are very hot (35°C+), and August sees many local businesses close for Ferragosto.

Getting Around

Rome's Metro has three lines (A, B, C). Buses cover the historic centre well. Walking is the best way to explore — many major sights are within 30 minutes on foot.

Local Cuisine

Try carbonara, amatriciana, cacio e pepe and supplì. Pizza al taglio (by the slice) is a staple. End every meal with gelato from an artisan gelateria.

Safety Tips

Beware of pickpockets around Termini station, the Colosseum and crowded buses. Keep bags zipped and in front. The emergency number is 112.

Cultural Etiquette

Dress modestly to enter churches (cover shoulders and knees). Italians eat late — dinner starts at 8pm. Tipping is not expected but appreciated.
