The Pirates exhibition follows their history from the South China Sea to the coast of North Africa. Focusing on real life figures including Edward ‘Blackbeard’ Teach, Anne Bonny, William Kidd and more, this exhibition showcases how the perception of pirates is changing.
From buried treasure to walking the plank, learn about what is truly fact and what is fiction. Admire a series of illustrations by Livia Giorgina Carpineto who brings the notorious pirate queen Zheng Yi Sao to life and see a The Pirate Hunter’s Cup on display while learning about the excellent Bartholomew Roberts.

Younger children are still welcome in the exhibition space, but we advise parents and carers to be mindful of the subjects raised. The National Maritime Museum has accessible toilets, and our cafés, exhibitions and gift shops are wheelchair accessible. All toilet and baby change facilities are wheelchair accessible. This exhibition is open until 4th January 2026.
